JATO North America Publishes Report on recent Automaker Automatic Emergency Braking Commitment
JATO North America has released a report focused on the recent automaker pledge to make Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) technology a standard feature on all new cars and trucks in the United States starting in 2022. The commitment, which includes nearly every automaker operating in the United States, was announced in March 2016 by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). According to NHTSA estimates, this voluntary commitment will push adoption of standard AEB systems up to three years faster than through a regulatory process. The two government entities believe this could prevent up to 28,000 crashes and 12,000 injuries along with improvements in productivity, such as the general reduction of traffic jams due to accidents. The JATO report specifically addresses the current status of AEB technology equipped on automaker’s vehicles. Highlights from the study include:
- Only 6% of all 2016 model year vehicles sold have AEB as a standard feature (across 20 different brands)
- However, automatic emergency braking is offered as a feature on 51% of all 2016 model lines available in the United States through March 2016
- Volvo and Tesla are the only two brands that currently equip AEB as a standard feature on their entire model lines
While only 6% of all 2016 model year (MY) vehicles sold have AEB as a standard feature, the pledge might not be as daunting due to the fact that every committed automaker currently offers automatic emergency braking on at least one model as either a standard or optional feature. While there will be challenges, particularly when it comes to the implementation of AEB on larger body styles such as trucks, JATO believes automakers are well-positioned to fulfill their AEB commitment by 2022, but also to continue to advance further in automotive safety technology.
