New two-wheeler market declines 28% vs last year despite month-on-month rise

  • More than 2.3 million two-wheelers registered in India during October 2026
  • Healthy demand across segments, with motorcycles taking more than half of sales

India's two-wheeler market recorded registrations of 2,321.1K units in October 2026, compared to 3,240.8K units in October 2025, resulting in a 28.4% YoY decline. The decline was primarily influenced by an exceptionally high festive-season base in the previous year, despite healthy retail activity across motorcycles, scooters, and electric vehicles during the month.

On a month-on-month (MoM) basis, the market posted strong growth of 28.8%, with registrations increasing from 1,802.6K units in September 2026 to 2,321.1K units in October 2026. The sharp sequential increase reflects festive demand, higher dealership footfall, attractive retail offers, and improved consumer sentiment across both urban and rural markets.

Ravi Bhatia, President at JATO Dynamics India, said: "The October 2026 performance reflects a market that experienced a year-on-year correction against an exceptionally strong October 2025 base, while simultaneously delivering robust month-on-month growth of nearly 29%. Festive season purchases, healthy consumer demand, and continued adoption of electric mobility supported overall market activity."

India’s October 2026 two-wheeler manufacturer performance

Honda retained its leadership position in October 2026 with a 27.93% market share, a +1.44 percentage point (pp) gain YoY. Its scooter and commuter motorcycle portfolio supported the gain despite the overall market decline.

Hero MotoCorp followed with a 26.23% market share. Share declined by 5.13 pp YoY, reflecting softer performance relative to the broader market, although the company maintained strong volumes in the commuter motorcycle segment.

TVS Motor recorded the highest market share gain among major OEMs, up 2.25 pp YoY to 20.09%. Healthy demand across motorcycles, scooters, and EVs supported its performance.

Bajaj Auto accounted for 9.18% of registrations. Royal Enfield increased its share to 5.42% (+0.61 pp YoY), reinforcing its position in the premium motorcycle segment. Suzuki captured 5.29% (+0.87 pp YoY), supported by its scooter portfolio, while Yamaha recorded 3.46% (+0.51 pp YoY).

Among electric vehicle manufacturers, Ather increased its market share to 1.39% (+0.45 pp YoY) and Ampere improved to 0.47% (+0.23 pp YoY). Ola Electric accounted for 0.53% of registrations, a marginal gain of 0.02 pp YoY.

At the model level, Hero Splendor Plus remained India’s best-selling two-wheeler, registering 261,376 units and consolidating its dominance in the commuter motorcycle segment.

Honda Activa retained its leadership among scooters with 244,671 units, highlighting sustained demand from urban and family-oriented buyers. TVS Jupiter recorded 144,648 units, maintaining its position among the country’s top-selling scooters.

India’s October 2026 two-wheeler segment mix

The Indian two-wheeler market in October 2026 remained motorcycle-driven, with motorcycles accounting for 52.7% of total registrations.

Scooters contributed 34.4% of registrations, supported by strong demand across metropolitan and urban markets. Electric scooters accounted for 11.3% of total registrations, indicating continued growth in EV adoption.

Mopeds represented 1.3% of registrations, while electric motorcycles accounted for 0.2%, remaining niche segments. The segment mix highlights the continued dominance of motorcycles while demonstrating a steady shift toward electric mobility, particularly within the scooter category.

Fuel mix trends

Petrol-powered vehicles continued to dominate the Indian two-wheeler market during October 2026. Petrol models accounted for 90.3% of total registrations, maintaining their position as the primary volume driver across motorcycles and scooters.

Electric vehicles contributed 9.7% of industry volumes, reflecting continued consumer interest in cleaner mobility solutions and expanding EV availability across key markets. CNG-powered two-wheelers accounted for only 0.1% of registrations, remaining a marginal contributor to overall industry volumes.

The fuel mix indicates that while petrol continues to dominate the market, electric vehicles are steadily increasing their footprint, particularly within urban scooter markets.

Market outlook

Overall, the Indian two-wheeler market remains fundamentally strong. The YoY correction reflects an exceptionally high October 2025 base, while the strong MoM recovery points to healthy underlying retail demand across metro, urban, and rural markets. Continued EV adoption, led by electric scooters, and broad geographic demand support the market’s outlook.
