The F8 Tributo to boost Ferrari sales in the V8 Supercar segment
The Ferrari F8 Tributo is the latest model from the brand that will be revealed in Geneva 2019. More than just an all-new model, it is the replacement of the Ferrari 488GTB, which was launched in 2015 to take the place of the 458. The reveal marks an overhaul of the model, which will see a new exterior, interior, engine and name. This in line with how the Italian brand traditionally likes to restyle its cars – a new name, technology upgrade and more power. We saw it when the FF became the GTC4 and the F12 Berlinetta became the 812 Superfast.
With 720 cv and a record specific power output of 185 cv/l, it is the most powerful V8 in Ferrari history. This is expected to be the feature that appeals most to consumers, given the importance of V8 engines to Ferrari’s success. Last year, V8 models counted for 58% of Ferrari’s Supercar global sales (excluding the Portofino/California). Most of them resulted from the Ferrari 488, where sales increased by 69%. In 10 years, demand for this kind of Ferrari jumped from almost 1,500 units to just over 3,900 units.
But Ferrari’s outstanding results in 2018 contrast with global demand for V8 Supercars. The US is the largest market for these cars, counting for 60% of total volume, which can be explained by the prominence of the Chevrolet Corvette. However, sales in the US fell by 23%, meaning that the global market was severely affected as a consequence. In fact, global sales of V8 Supercars fell by 14% last year to 38,100 units – the lowest volume since 2013 – despite increased demand in Germany, the UK and China.
