Recent years have seen the UK economy bounce back from recession quicker than many of our overseas cousins and UK GDP sits at 2,988 million US dollars with the automotive sector providing 11.8% of the UK’s total exports in 2014.

A population of over 65 million has enabled over 2.63 million vehicle registrations in 2015, another year of growth. With the market now sitting at its highest level for many years the UK is leading the growth in automotive registrations across Europe.

Figures for local manufacturing have shown a 3.9% increase from 2014, creating a ten year high of 1.58 million vehicles and exports of 1.22 million, up 2.7% on last year.

The table of most popular brands in the UK car market is led by Ford, as it has been for many years, followed by Vauxhall, Volkswagen, BMW and Audi. These top 5 brands cover all but one of the top ten models in the UK market for 2015. The model list for 2015 is led by Ford with its ever popular Fiesta model. Vauxhall Corsa is next, followed by Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf and Nissan Qashqai.

The commercial vehicle market is once again led by Ford, with Peugeot and Mercedes taking the place of BMW and Audi from the comparable Car top 5 list. The only model in the top 10 list for 2015 not from these 5 brands is the Citroen Berlingo sitting in 6th place. Ford’s Transit Custom model takes top spot again in 2015 from Vauxhall’s Vivaro and Ford’s Transit model ranges.

During April 2016 the Commercial vehicle industry converged on the NEC in Birmingham for the annual British Commercial Vehicle show which saw the return of LDV as a brand to the UK; imported from Chinese production via Irish automotive importers The Harris Group.

May 2016 saw the first Motor Show in London for many years as the London Motor Show took place in Battersea Park, London and saw MG launch its new GS model along with other highlights from the industry. The London Motor Show also showcased many models and technologies from a wide cross section of the automotive industry.
