Written by JATO Advisory | 13 August 2026

New Delhi, 10th August 2026 India’s two-wheeler market has recorded significant year-on-year growth in July 2026, according to JATO data. Registrations increased 28.15% YoY to 1.818 million units, compared to 1.419 million units in July 2025.

This strong growth reflects continued momentum in personal mobility demand, supported by resilient rural consumption, healthy commuter vehicle demand, and improving economic sentiment across key markets.

On a month-on-month basis, however, the market witnessed a slight decline of -1.30%, with registrations easing from 1.842 million units in June 2026 to 1.818 million in July 2026. This sequential moderation suggests normalisation following strong performance in previous months, while overall demand remains stable and positive.

Ravi Bhatia, President at JATO Dynamics India, commented: "India's two-wheeler performance in July 2026 highlights a market that continues to demonstrate strong year-on-year growth. Demand is being driven by resilient commuter usage, healthy rural participation, and sustained interest in scooters and premium motorcycles."

India's July 2026 two-wheeler manufacturer performance

Honda emerged as the market leader in July 2026 with a 26.40% market share, recording a +0.29% YoY gain. The company continued to benefit from strong performance across both its scooter portfolio and commuter motorcycle range.

Hero followed closely with a 24.63% share, although it registered a marginal -0.21% YoY decline, indicating increasing competitive intensity despite maintaining strong sales volumes.

TVS continued its growth trajectory, expanding its market share to 21.01%, the highest YoY improvement among major OEMs at +0.95%. The gain reflects sustained momentum across motorcycles, scooters, and premium offerings.

At the model level, Hero Splendor Plus remained India's best-selling two-wheeler with registrations of 288,599 units, continuing its dominance in the commuter motorcycle segment.

Honda Activa retained its position as the leading scooter with 217,944 units, reinforcing strong urban and family-oriented demand.

TVS Jupiter recorded 122,298 units, securing its position among the top-performing scooters, while Bajaj Pulsar registered 100,190 units, highlighting continued demand for sporty commuter motorcycles.

The competitive landscape indicates growing strength for Honda and TVS, while EV-focused brands such as Ather continue gaining traction amid gradually rising electric vehicle adoption.

India's July 2026 two-wheeler segment mix

The two-wheeler market in July 2026 remained predominantly motorcycle-led, with motorcycles accounting for 56.9% of total registrations. The segment continues to be driven by strong commuter demand, particularly in semi-urban and rural regions.

Scooters contributed 32.2% of total registrations, reflecting sustained demand in urban centres and among personal mobility-focused consumers. Within that, electric scooters accounted for 9.5% of the total market, indicating continued growth in EV adoption and increasing acceptance among urban buyers.

The fuel mix remained heavily dominated by petrol-powered vehicles, which account for 88.7% of total registrations in July 2026. Electric vehicles increased their share to 11.2%, reflecting steady growth in adoption and improving consumer acceptance across major markets.

This fuel mix trend indicates that while petrol remains the primary driver of industry volumes, EV penetration continues to expand steadily month after month.

India's two-wheeler geographic distribution

Two-wheeler registrations in July 2026 were led by Delhi with approximately 50.6K units, narrowly ahead of Bengaluru at 47.8K units. Chennai ranked third with around 39.2K registrations, followed by Hyderabad with 35.6K units and Pune with 29.4K units, highlighting strong demand across major metropolitan markets.

At the state level, Uttar Pradesh remained the largest two-wheeler market in July 2026 with approximately 199.4K registrations. Maharashtra followed closely with 185.0K units, while Tamil Nadu recorded 184.9K units, reflecting strong demand across both western and southern regions.

Two-wheeler registrations in July 2026 were led by urban markets with 1.061 million units, accounting for the majority of overall industry volumes. Rural markets contributed 435.9K units, demonstrating continued strength in demand from agricultural and non-metro regions.

Metro cities accounted for 321.0K registrations, supported by strong scooter and EV penetration. The classification mix indicates that while urban centres continue to drive overall volumes, rural markets remain a critical pillar of industry growth and long-term expansion.

Two-wheeler inventory levels in July 2026 remained stable at approximately 37-40 days, suggesting a well-balanced supply-demand environment. Dealers continue to maintain adequate stock levels aligned with retail demand, with no significant indications of inventory buildup or channel stress.

Overall, the Indian two-wheeler market remains resilient and well-positioned for sustained growth, supported by rising mobility requirements, strengthening consumer sentiment, expanding EV penetration, and deeper market reach across both urban and rural geographies.
