India's two-wheeler market up one third in September 2026

New Delhi, 7th October 2026 – India's two-wheeler market continued its strong growth momentum in September 2026, with registrations increasing 32.93% YoY to 1,789.5K units, compared to 1,346.2K units in September 2025. The growth was supported by healthy consumer demand, festive season buying, stable rural activity, and strong performance across motorcycles, scooters, and electric vehicles.

On a month-on-month (MoM) basis, the market grew by 3.62%, with registrations increasing from 1,727.0K units in August 2026 to 1,789.5K units in September 2026. The increase reflects strengthening retail momentum as the market entered the festive season.

Demand fundamentals remain healthy, aided by festive season purchases, stable rural participation, and increasing acceptance of electric mobility."

 

India's September 2026 two-wheeler manufacturer performance

 

Honda retained its leadership position in September 2026 with a 26.19% market share, recording a +0.96% YoY gain. The company's strong scooter portfolio, led by Activa, along with its commuter motorcycle range, continued to support robust sales growth.

Hero MotoCorp followed with a 24.28% market share. While registrations increased 31.32% YoY, market share declined marginally by 0.30 percentage points, indicating rising competition within the commuter motorcycle segment.

TVS Motor continued its strong growth trajectory, achieving a 20.37% market share and recording the highest market share gain among major OEMs at +1.31% YoY. Broad-based demand across motorcycles, scooters, and EVs supported the company's 42.05% YoY volume growth.

 

 

 

At the model level, Hero Splendor Plus remained India's best-selling two-wheeler, registering 248,592 units and maintaining its dominance in the commuter motorcycle segment.

Honda Activa retained its leadership position among scooters with 232,739 units, highlighting sustained demand from urban and family-oriented consumers. TVS Jupiter recorded 140,927 units, further strengthening its position among the country's leading scooters.

India's September 2026 two-wheeler segment mix

The Indian two-wheeler market in September 2026 remained motorcycle-driven, with motorcycles accounting for 52.7% of total registrations.

Scooters contributed 35.1% of overall registrations, reflecting healthy urban demand and continued preference for convenience-oriented mobility solutions. Electric scooters accounted for 10.6% of total registrations, indicating continued growth in EV adoption across key markets.

Mopeds represented 1.4% of registrations, while electric motorcycles accounted for 0.2%, remaining a niche segment within the broader industry. The segment mix highlights the continued dominance of motorcycles while demonstrating a gradual shift toward electric mobility, particularly within the scooter category.

India's two-wheeler geographic distribution

Among cities, Delhi remained the largest two-wheeler market in September 2026 with approximately 58.9K registrations.

Bengaluru followed with 46.2K units, while Hyderabad recorded 36.6K registrations, highlighting strong retail activity across major metropolitan markets. Pune contributed approximately 36.5K units, while Chennai registered 35.3K units, reflecting healthy demand across key urban centres.

 

At the state level, Uttar Pradesh remained India's largest two-wheeler market with approximately 191.3K registrations in September 2026.

Maharashtra followed closely with 190.6K units, while Tamil Nadu contributed 174.1K registrations, highlighting strong demand across western and southern regions. Karnataka recorded 131.3K units, while Gujarat registered 127.2K units, maintaining their positions among the country's largest two-wheeler markets.

 Overall, the Indian two-wheeler market remains resilient and well-positioned for sustained growth, supported by improving consumer sentiment, expanding electric mobility adoption, and healthy demand across urban, semi-urban, and rural markets.
