Motorcycles remain core growth area in two-wheeler market March registrations data reveals

Written by Team JATO | 16 April 2026

New Delhi, 16 April 2026 – India’s two-wheeler market delivered strong growth in March 2026 with registrations reaching 1.95 million units, a 28.21% increase compared to March 2025, and a 13.90% rise compared to February 2026’s 1.71 million units, according to JATO Dynamics.

Ravi Bhatia, President of JATO Dynamics India, said: “March 2026 reflects the fundamental strength of India’s two-wheeler market. The year-on-year growth of more than 28% is significant, but what is equally telling is the month-on-month expansion. It demonstrates healthy underlying demand, steady replacement buying, and consistent usage-driven purchases across commuter segments."

Motorcycles remain the cornerstone of Indias two-wheeler market, particularly in rural and semi-urban clusters where they serve as an essential mode of daily commuting and livelihood transport. Demand in these segments is driven by practical, usage-led purchasing behaviour, and the motorcycle category continues to represent the largest share of overall industry volumes. This structural role is expected to persist, underpinning the markets volume base even as other segments evolve.

While motorcycles dominate on volume, the scooter and EV-scooter segments are expanding steadily and reshaping the composition of the market. Urban mobility requirements are a key driver, with consumers in cities and larger towns increasingly gravitating towards the convenience and efficiency of scooters. Rising EV preference is accelerating this shift further, with electric scooters gaining traction as charging infrastructure improves and the total cost of ownership becomes more compelling for urban buyers.

One of the most significant structural developments in the two-wheeler market is the growing contribution of tier-2 and tier-3 cities. These markets are becoming major growth engines, reducing the industry’s historical dependence on metro demand cycles. As aspirations rise and connectivity improves in smaller cities and towns, two-wheeler penetration is deepening, opening up a broader and more resilient demand base for manufacturers and dealers alike.

Across the dealer network, inventory discipline has remained healthy. This is supporting better sales predictability and reducing risk for dealerships, enabling a more stable retail environment.

Ravi added: “The two-wheeler industry has entered 2026 with real momentum. Motorcycles will continue to anchor volumes, but we are seeing clear structural shifts with scooters and EVs reshaping consumer behaviour, with tier-2 and tier-3 markets playing an ever-greater role. With stable supply dynamics and broad-based regional demand, the outlook for the year ahead is positive.”
