Business owners in a West Midlands town say they are nervous about the impact of Donald Trump's automotive tariffs on the town's economy. The US President has placed a 10% tariff on UK goods, but 25% on all imports of cars and car parts. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), which paused all shipments to the US in the wake of the announcement, employs 9,000 people in Solihull.

"With the current path of painful tariffs and overly rigid regulations, the American and European car industries are being put at risk," amid increased competition from China, Elkann said at the group's annual shareholders' meeting.

Retail sales jump as people rush to buy cars ahead of tariffs
Retail spending — one of the key drivers in the economy — saw its biggest jump in more than two years during March, as more people rushed to buy cars and other big-ticket items ahead of President Trump's new tariffs. Spending at stores, restaurants and car dealerships grew 1.4% in March compared to February, according to Wednesday's data from the Commerce Department. That's the biggest increase since January 2023 — and the driver was mainly autos.

Used cars with highest retail margin for dealers in March
BMW performed well in both the brand and model charts collated by Dealer Auction’s Retail Margin Monitor for March. The brand headed up the top 10 makes for models with a retail value of under £10,000 for the third month running, with an average retail margin of £2,200. It came third in the top 10 in the over-£10,000 chart. Dealer Auction’s marketplace director, Kieran TeeBoon, said: “BMW has registered an emphatic performance so far in 2025.
