New Alfa Romeo Giulia to join a difficult and moderate growing segment

Alfa GiuliaAlfa Romeo has finally presented the rest of the range of its Giulia midsize sedan. The new model will join the premium D-Segment to rival with the BMW 3 and 4 Series, the Audi A4 and A5, the Mercedes C-Class, Jaguar XE, Volvo S60, Lexus IS and Infiniti Q50. Last year the premium mid-size sedan/SW and coupe/cabrio segment posted a volume increase of 7%, following the 27% rise recorded by the new leader of the segment – the Mercedes C-Class – which managed to increase its segment share from 22.4% in 2014 to 26.5% in 2015. The segment, which counted for 51% of total D-Segment (mainstream brands included) was also boosted by the increasing demand for the BMW 4-Series (+35%) and the Volvo V60 (+5%). Non-German brands controlled 15% of the premium midsize sales against 13% share in 2014.

The new Alfa Romeo Giulia will join the segment playing as local in Italy, the fourth largest market in Europe for this kind of cars. Germany demand counted for 32% of total registrations, while the UK came second with 24% share, posting a 16% increase on 2014 results. French figures represented 6.4% at third place with sales down by 2%. In Italy the segment is mostly dominated by the 3-Series (25% share), C-Class (22.3%) and A4 (21.9%). The Volvo V60 was the best-selling non-German premium midsize with 9.06% segment share.

January 2016 data showed that total D-Segment sales (mainstream and premium) grew by 5% compared to January 2015, to 95,000 units, counting for 8.7% of total market.
