Mainstream C-SUV: Skoda, Honda & Opel aim to grab a piece of this competitive segment
Skoda knows how to gain clients. The successful Octavia, along with the strong results of the Superb in segments that don’t grow anymore, shows how popular the Czech brand is, as it continues to post growth in Europe and China. The latest model from Skoda was the Kodiaq, which is already among Europe’s best-selling mainstream D-SUV’s. However, Skoda needs to have its own compact SUV, and the Karoq is the answer to this.
The Skoda Karoq will play in one of the most competitive market segments, but it is a highly competitive product. It seems likely then that the Karoq will be popular across many European countries.
The Grandland X is set to become the German version of the successful Peugeot 3008 SUV. With it, Opel is finally bringing a competitive compact SUV to the market after the bad results of the Antara. With the Opel brand signifying German reliability among the brands of PSA, the Grandland could become an example of how the three brands can really work together.
The Grandland is not supposed to take sales away from the Peugeot 3008 SUV or the new Citroen C5 Aircross, as they are targeting different clients. Nonetheless, Opel and Vauxhall are expected to see growth in Europe thanks to the Grandland, which is likely to hit the top 10 C-SUV segment in the mid-term. Currently, the German brand has only two SUVs in its range, which has had negative consequences on its registrations. In fact, Opel/Vauxhall was one of two brands in the top 10 in H1-17 to post negative change in Europe.
